You may do any or all of the options listed. Depending on the quality of your work, each research essay will raise two MTs to a level 4. This is in addition to any other Level 4 work you have done on other projects. You must already have a level 3 in ALL Measurement Topic to be eligible for a Level 4.
Level 4 Option #1
Research one of the 27 Amendments to our U.S. Constitution. Explain the history of the Amendment and the changes it made to our understanding of the Constitution and the rights that it helped define. Identify and analyze any important court cases that have reinterpreted the Amendment. Identify and explain any current controversies that involve differing interpretations of the Amendment's meaning. Minimum 5 pages, double spaced.
Level 4 Option #2
Research one of the 44 people who have served as President of the United States. (You may not choose our current President). Explain the important accomplishments and controversies of their Presidency. Evaluate their effectiveness as President using the following criteria: role as chief executive, legislative accomplishments, foreign policy accomplishments, handling of the economy, etc. Draw some conclusions about their presidency: were they a great president, a so-so president, or a terrible president? Minimum 5 pages, double spaced.
Level 4 Option #3
Research one of the presidential election campaigns between 1800 and 2012. Identify the candidates involved in the election, the parties they belonged to, and their position on the issues. Explain the important issues that were of concern to voters during that campaign. Analyze the campaign strategies of both sides and any controversies that played a role in the outcome of the election. Try to explain why the winner won and what their election demonstrated about politics at the time. Minimum 5 pages, double spaced.
Level 4 Option #4
Choose any current issue in American politics today. Suggestions might include: gun control, gay rights, abortion, the death penalty, environmental issues, drug policy, government funded health care, the minimum wage, income inequality, free speech, freedom of religion, etc. Please try to think beyond this list to find something that interests you. Present a balanced analysis of all sides in the debate over this issue. This means researching and explaining the arguments and beliefs of both sides. In you conclusion, you may present your stand on the issue, supported by evidence and arguments. Minimum 5 pages, double spaced.
- All Level 4 work must be turned in by Friday, June 6.

- You must cite your sources. (You may use wikipedia as one source, but it should not be your only source.)
- Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you plagiarize, you will not be given an opportunity to redo the assignment.
