You may do any or all of the options listed. Depending on the quality of your work, each research essay will raise two MTs to a level 4. This is in addition to any other Level 4 work you have done on other projects. You must already have a level 3 in ALL Measurement Topic to be eligible for a Level 4.
Research a U.S. President from the time period covered this semester. You may choose: Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, or Ronald Reagan. Evaluate their success as a President. You should focus specifically on how that President a) handled foreign policy (especially the Cold War with the Soviet Union) and b) dealt with civil rights issues. What important Cold War crisis or civil rights issues did they have to deal with and how did they handle them? (Minimum of 4 pages)
Research a group of Americans, other than African-Americans who have had to struggle for civil rights and equal protection. You may choose from: women, Native Americans, immigrants, Hispanic Americans, disabled Americans, homosexuals, Asian Americans, or another group of your own choosing. Explain the types of discrimination and inequality they have had to overcome. Also explain the important executive (presidential) actions, legislative actions (laws), Supreme Court cases, and constitutional amendments that helped that group achieve their civil rights and equal protection under the law. (Minimum of 4 pages)
Using YouTube, watch a video on one of the decades covered by the series The Century: America's Time. Write an essay in which you compare life in America today with life in America during that decade. You may choose the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s. What features of American life were similar to today? What was different? Think in terms of America's role in the world, civil rights issues, technology, important issues, etc. (Minimum of 4 pages)
